It's been a long while since I lived near Tampa but, I believe there are metal detecting clubs in the area that he might want to contact.

Welcome from Kansas. You did not specify what type of machine your father has. However, I AM SURE there are plenty of "HOW TO" videos on YouTube and doesn't cost you a penny.

Have you thought about detecting yourself? The two of you going out and learning not only how his detector works but also how to retrieve targets seems like a great father and son or daughter activity

If you lived in Kansas I'd do it free. Don't pay anyone to do that rather, look for a local metal detecting club. I would think you could find help there and your dad would have continuous assistance from more than one experience source.
