Earlier this year, on Thursday morning, 28 January, an excessively rare Ancient British gold quarter stater, probably minted by the Belgae of Hampshire c.55-45 BC, was discovered at Sutton Scotney, six miles north of Venta Belgarum (modern Winchester).

It was found by a youthful grandmother, Mrs Angela Stone, 65, who has five grandchildren and who has been metal detecting for over ten years. During this time she has unearthed no fewer than nine gold coins, all dating from the late iron age. “I seem to have a Celtic connection”, she says.

Her rare gold quarter stater — only one other specimen has been recorded, also from Hampshire — will be sold by auction ...
