Well, a buddy and I where out on a permission hunt. The home is circa 1800s and I had obtain permission from the Director to detect. Arrived around 0900 hour and at 1130 hour neighbor comes storming over. The exchange goes like this.

Neighbor: Excuse me, EXCUSE ME.
(I had on headphones)
Me: Oh, Yes?
Neighbor: Do you have permission to be on this property? (with serious attitude)
Me: Hello, my name is blah blah blah, and I have permission from the Director to be here today. I spoke with the Director yesterday.
Neighbor: You have permission to dig holes in the ground? (more attitude)
Me: Yes, Ma'am
Neighbor: So, do you have permission to be here.
Me: Like I said, I have permission to be here today from the Director.
Neighbor: So, where are you from?
Me: I'm sorry Ma'am, and your name is? (politely but getting pissed)
Neighbor: That is none of your concern!
Me: Well, like I said, I have permission to be here today.
Neighbor: Well, we will see about that (and storms off)

After the exchange, I emailed the Director and the Director just like, good for you.

I told my buddy, that now we can't leave for another 45 minutes, just to prove a point. We waited for the PD and everything, but no show.
As a matter of fact the PD drove past on several occasions and never stopped.

I didn't mine the questioning of permission. As a matter of fact, I welcome and encourage it. But I did not like the attitude that came with it.
Half of me wanted to tell the lady to buzz off.

Kudos to you for handling it the right way. I have been questioned before, on that occasion I stated that the owner gave me permission and dropped the owner's name in the conversation, all was okay.

Been there done that same thing. Actually I asked the person if they had permission and their statement was yes because they were the neighbor and I stated that just because you are a neighbor doesn't give you permission on the property. I told her trespassing isn't biased you are either trespassing or you aren't and if you don't have specific permission from landowner to set foot on his property then you fall in the category of TRESPASSING;)

You did great! I would have had a little more fun with her.

Neighbor: Excuse me, EXCUSE ME.
(I had on headphones)
Me: Oh, Yes?
Neighbor: Do you have permission to be on this property? (with serious attitude)
Me: Listen lady, I didn't ask permission when I buried my ex-wife here, and I'm not about to start asking now.
Neighbor: You have permission to dig holes in the ground? (more attitude)
Me: Look, I'm just trying to retrieve the Rolex Datejust I accidentally left on the body, so after I get it I'm gone.
Neighbor: So, do you have permission to be here.
Me: Like I said, I don't need no steenking permission lady.
Neighbor: Well, we will see about that (and storms off)

Don't sweat it man. Some people are just like that. Listen to this one, awhile back I got permission from this guy to hunt around his property. One day he came out screaming at me,I mean just nasty, asking me what did I think I was doing. Don't know if he had dementia or didn't take his meds or what. I tried to tell Mr Crazy that he gave me permission to hunt . It was weird, like he never even saw me before. I don't know if that was his way of telling me he changed his mind or what. But he sure ran me on out of there.

I have permission to be here ma'am, and you do not, so I'll have to ask you to step off of the property please.

Same thing happened to me also....but after I got the upper hand, I got brave, and showed my ass, by bragging about the ring I found.
Half hour later, the old crow talked me out of it, by proving to me it belonged to the previous owner of the property.
I wasn't gonna give in, but she dangled a carrot in front of me, promising other places she owned for me to hunt.
As soon as the ring hit her hand....permission rescinded.

I'm so stupid.:BangHead:

My version

Neighbor: Excuse me, EXCUSE ME.
Me: Yes??? (In irritated tone)
Neighbor: Do you have permission to be on this property? (with serious attitude)
Me: Nope! I just need to find the gun I left on this property from one of the murders I did! Should only take a few days of locating.
Neighbor: Wait! Does this require digging holes and disturbing the dirt.
Me: Yup! I just need my bulldozer.
Neighbor: So, do you have permission to be here.
Me: Like I said, I have no permission at all.
Neighbor: Did the owner of the land let you dig here (restating the stupid question again)
Me: Nope! But I have been tracking them, and found out they are on vacation for the next 2 weeks, so I should not have any problems/
Neighbor: Well, Good day and good luck finding your gun!
Me: You too! Enjoy the rest of your day!

Happened to my son and i twice this year. The first time we were in a cow pasture when this man came driving down the side road like a mad man. He started in on my son about how we were trespassing and scaring his cattle. Fact is, the cattle was following us around like puppy dogs and it was not until he showed up that they scattered. I suspect it was his car that got them going. Come to find out he was a renter on the property and the owner of the property never told him we were going to be there. We stood our ground and told him to take it up with the owner. Then a few months later I had the pleasure of dealing with a middle aged man fresh out of prison. Talk about a butt munch! He was ready to throw down and was sure we were trespassing. Again, the property belonged to his mother and she failed to tell him we had permission. In that case, it took everything i had to keep from pulling out the ole can of whoop a**. Still, i was polite and he wound up getting the message that my son and i were not going anywhere.

So, Congrats on holding your ground and keep on diggin.

I think we all have these kind of stories;) I'm sure you have all seen the movie The Blue and the Grey. Well the big mansion that it shows on there was the house I was detecting at. The house on the movie isn't civil war period but it's close enough. Anyways the wife and her estranged husband weren't getting along and the house that I was detecting had recently burned due to mysterious reasons. The wife suspected the husband. Anyways I was there one day all by myself and I hear someone yelling at me. I look over and some tatted up ex prison inmate had a knife out threatening me saying he is going to whoop my butt cause I was trespassing. I stood my ground and said no the woman who owns the property gave me permission and he called me a liar. At this point he accused me of calling him a liar and began to lunge at me. That's when I kindly showed him my .45 on my side and told him unless he wants to end up 6 foot down or back in the pen then he best step back and call the owner. Needless to say I had no more trouble out of him and his mom the landowner brought me some tea

I have very few problems with people, and few nutjobs. Must be doing something wrong.

Or doing something right. When I've encountered problems, it only had to do with digging holes once or twice. Normally it was local scumbags contemplating a crime or people letting their dogs loose. (The unleashed dog thing is specifically prohibited in the local parks, while metal detecting is not.) It never escalated because I chose not to escalate it.

Granted, I live in a bad place, so it might just be that the nosey neighbors see a guy that's not committing a crime and mind their business. It's probably different in better neighborhoods. My biggest problem is people wanting to come up and talk about it. I don't have a problem explaining what I'm doing, but I'd rather be doing it than talking about it.

Actually my biggest problem is with the TSA. Fly to another country with a Deus in your checked luggage and let me know what happens. You'd have thought that I had a nuclear weapon in there. It wasn't really a PROBLEM (nothing was stolen and my bags arrived when I did), but things tend to be a bit disorganized upon arrival.

I love this thread. I always ask permission to detect. I do go to parks that allow it. Was getting out of the car the weekend after Labor Day at the local state park (allowed there) and the ranger is watching me like I'm the antichrist or something. So as I'm just getting started I deliberately walk right past the ranger's truck. He stays in the truck and I say hi, and he informs me I can't detect after 9 am. (Which is true, hours to detect are 6 am to 9 am Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend). So I said, that's Mem. day to Labor Day, right? He says right. I said, Labor Day was last weekend. I get a dumb stare and "oh". Found about $4 in clad and a few toys and some sea glass. AFTER 9 am......Rangers are very nice, btw. They have do deal with a lot of morons who break the rules all the time down there, mainly the one about "thou shalt not have alcohol on thy beach" law, which by the beer bottle caps are so plentiful there. I always show off the trash I remove too!

I tell you, some people are just nuts. This guy I am talking about wasn't even that old either. I would say he didn't look no older then in his late 50's maybe 60. I could understand it more if he was a Old man. But then again I guess sometimes mental illness doesn't discriminate with age , If that was even the case?
