Share with us your top 10 favorite things about your country! I'd love to hear them. Pictures, too, if you've got them. :)

Cheers!

Skippy

1. Why Russians love their country – first and foremost for our kind and hospitable people, we have no neighborhoods, areas where you feel in danger, no matter where you go in Russia and which would not be the man you will meet in arms. You are always welcome, often you will be invited into the house and feed, and in the cold season will offer shelter. To fully understand Russia foreign guests, it is not enough to come here on a trip, it is necessary to live, to travel. Many American and European citizens coming to Russia to live here, they are engaged in farming and other businesses and don't want to go from here.

2. We criticize their country continuously, but when it abuses someone else- we are terribly offended. It is for us as a grumpy mother-in-law – though spelled Bay! But should someone say that she's wrong – get in the face. We have many dishonest officials who suck people's blood, but we believe that the hand of Vladimir Putin and to reach them!

3. Doors in a house, apartment, closed only at night. Alcoholics condemn all quarter, and about drug addicts say, how about aliens. We trust our neighbors, serve delicious food to each other. We are not difficult to distribute the wi-fi password to neighbors. If you find yourself in a difficult situation that familiar people will help you money and not ask them back. The neighbors are not going to report you to the police if you did something not quite legal.

4. Only with us you can tell the neighbor that the yard was infested with bullies or alcoholics, and he gathered a gang of his friends, will hold educational work, until they realize they are wrong and leave. And if the car broke down, then going home half of the men who will help to repair.

5. Because we really do have the most beautiful girls in the world. We have a critically high percentage of beautiful women. Our girls are intelligent, kind, affectionate, but nevertheless do not give us men relief. Not one Russian man will not pass women if she is in danger and will fight one against five, even knowing that it will get to complete.

6. Because we can give head to some neighborhood teenager who smokes in the stairwell, while his parents ran off somewhere. And when his parents find out about this they will not be on you to sue and praised for vigilance. Because there is nothing to smoke.

7.Because only here, when you play guitar and sing songs in nature, you come to total strangers, bring food and drinks, and beg to play some of Russian rock, learn, tell their stories and it didn't look weird. And often become friends for life.

8. For what in Russia were born great men, writers, composers, academics, and scientists. For our athletes who are accused of acceptance of doping, but never showed a single proof for this reason! For half a century, we laugh at the Russian football, but still rooting for their team!

9. Because Russia is insanely beautiful, our great lakes and rivers with clean water Baikal, Volga, the Urals, Seliger, and many others from which you can drink tap water, we have thousands of places where you feel that I was born Russian. In a forest where if you get lost, you will not die, at least from hunger.

10. I can be and would like to be an American or a citizen of another country, if I was not born in Russia but I am Russian and proud of it. Yes, in any history of any country is a dark spot in America, they also have. The information that show in the States about Russia's history is very distorted, about the same famine of the Ukrainian people, first of all Russian people live there! Secondly, those people whom the new government, made heroes of the new Ukraine, the more responsible for the deaths of their fellow countrymen, but then were very hard times, but why is it hushed up how many people died of starvation all over Russia and not only in Ukraine. Communism it was a difficult time!

The way I understand first Che Guevara's post is that Russia isn't so bad as it has being described to people from West by their governments through out the centuries. It's an old story started in 11th century and it hasn't ended so far.

I can say propaganda is shared at all levels in different directions from both sides. It's all about politics.

10 favorite things about Russia! (c) SuchMuch

1. You are not supposed to ask permissions for metal detecting!

2. If you don't like what surrounds you (government, people, living conditions, job) you can always flee to a forest and spend the rest of the life living there. Uninhabited territory of Russia is really huge.

3. It's a rare thing when Tax authorities get interested in yr yields

4. Ancestors I'm proud of. It deals with entire history since Rus' arrived to a place now known as Russia

5. Science that was in Soviet Union. We were the first who stepped into the space

That's all :)

The Russian people are great, but not the government.
The government in 2016 further tightened control over the already-shrinking space for free expression, association, and assembly and intensified persecution of independent critics. Parliament adopted laws expanding the power of law enforcement and security agencies, including to control online speech. The parliamentary vote in September resulted in the ruling party, United Russia, gaining a constitutional majority in the State Duma, the parliament’s lower chamber. Russia continued to support rebels who commit abuses in eastern Ukraine. Russia’s actions in occupied Crimea created a human rights crisis.

There are opinions and there are facts. I haven’t shared my opinion other then the Russian government is not great. Not something you could say to loudly in Russia but hopefully you still can here.

In case Charlie P. doesn't see this, I PM'd you the lyrics to "At the Elbe" by Fred Small.

I'd like to hear the lyrics too. Not being from Boston Irish brogue is difficult (If that's what it is) even for me who is assumed to be Irish.

At the Elbe...

Well mister I just overheard you talking through your drink
How the Russians lie like rugs how they've pushed us to the brink
Now sit right here beside me I've an old man's tale to tell
How Yanks and Reds were friends once at the Elbe.

My name is Joe Polowski I hitched up in '41
Left my sweetheart in Chicago and I learned to fire a gun
The fog in the Ardennes so thick you could not see your nose
Nor the ghosts in the Belgian wood advancing through the snow.

We left our dead behind us and we scaled the Dragon's Teeth
With screaming mimis overhead not one of us could sleep
Some fell to the enemy some fell to the creeping cold
And I killed a German sniper who was not fourteen years old.

When a soldier takes a hit my friend it ain't like Hollywood
Bone and guts go flying and everywhere there's blood
For a moment he is mystified there must be some mistake
As it all drains out in a crimson lake.

Then April turned the weather and likewise the tide of war
As haggard hungry Germans surrendered by the score
And thank god for the Russians who took the battle's brunt
And broke the back of the Wermacht along the eastern front. Then

We saw a burst of lilacs and the river swift and wide
And rest and welcome waiting for us on the other side
And Yanks and Reds laughed out loud to be alive at the Elbe.

We caught the glint of water and upon the distant shore
Men and trucks and horses not German and not ours
No bridge to cross but at the dock a boat securely tied
We blew the chain and rowed like demons for the other side.

But when we stepped up on the land oh Jesus what a sight
Blackened bodies of civilians like driftwood piled high
Cut down by stray artillery -- what the hell is it all for
We knelt and cursed the cruelty and madness men call war.

Three Russians approached us, we shook hands and then embraced
Stalingrad had traced its lines of sadness on their face
Upon that field of corpses these weary happy men
Swore an oath that it must never happen again.

And then we wept and cheered and spoke in languages unknown
They poured us Russian vodka by god we drank it down
We sang "The Volga Boatman" they sang "Tavern in the Town"
I never kissed so many men as on that afternoon when

We saw a burst of lilacs and the river swift and wide
And rest and welcome waiting for us on the other side
And Yanks and Reds laughed out loud to be alive at the Elbe.

But no sooner were we stateside than the cold war headlines read
Commies in the unions commies under every bed
Hurrah the Nazi devil's down long live the devil Red
And not one word about the oath we swore amongst the dead.

There are kids today who'll tell you we fought Russia in the war
There are armchair heroes set to settle some old score
There are profiteers and pushers primed to send young men once more
To blow themselves to glory on some godforsaken shore.

So drape my coffin with the flag of the good old USA
Let Yanks in army khaki and Reds in Russian gray
Lower me so gently into the German clay
And speak again the oath we swore that day when

We saw a burst of lilacs and the river swift and wide
And rest and welcome waiting for us on the other side
And Yanks and Reds laughed out loud to be alive at the Elbe.

...at the Elbe.

And this may or may not work . . .

I don't like the politics, the time will come and people all over the world know the real truth about Ukraine.

Ukraine is not a country, ukraine is a term that has been used for centuries and it's equal to term "border". Referring to 13th century books the place I live now is ukraine as well.

As to Odessa, it's an old Russian town, established by Ekaterina 2

As to human rights watch, it's a camo for color revolutions. Every time somebody starts to talk about human rights in Russia, I very doubt this person really concerns about humans and especially their rights.

Great, terrible, great war! Our people should not forget all the horrors and deeds of our great men! In the most terrible war we were allies, brothers! Despite politics, we should forget it! And keep faith in our great nation two States!
