Castle with a grisly past: Eerie photos show an abandoned fairy-tale mansion deep in the forests of New York once owned by a family plagued by madness[/h]
  • Pictures show the overgrown Dundas Castle in Roscoe, New York, slowly being swallowed in to the woodland
  • Crumbling mansion, also known as Craig-E-Clair, started life as a summer lodge built by in the early 1880s
  • Land then purchased by Ralph Wurts-Dundas whose wife and daughter were later committed to a sanatorium

Lawn looks at least semi maintained in those pics, does not fit the definition of "taken over by nature" from what I can see.

Wonder if anyone could google up a sat shot ?

"added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2001."

It's a cool place, but the above sentence pretty much shuts down detecting and digging. (unless someone really knows
someone)

no I don't think the National Register of Historic Places, prevents the owners from
allowing detecting on the property.
I think if anything it only pertains to changing the the Structure

What are the restrictions, rules, regulations for historic property owners?
From the Federal perspective (the National Register of Historic Places is part of the National Park Service), a property owner can do whatever they want with their property as long as there are no Federal monies attached to the property. You can find this on our website at:
http://www.nps.gov/nr/national_register_fundamentals.htm
However, before this occurs, you can, or the property owner should contact the State historic preservation office (SHPO.) The SHPO is the state agency that oversees historic preservation efforts in their state. There may be state or local preservation laws that they should be aware of before they undertake a project with a historic property.
You can find contact information for the SHPOs at:
http://www.nps.gov/nr/shpolist.htm
If Federal monies are attached to the property then any changes to the property have to allow the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation (www.achp.gov) to comment on the project.
You can also read a copy of the National Register of Historic Places code of Federal regulations at: http://www.nps.gov/nr/regulations.htm
You can also find general information for owners at:
http://www.nps.gov/nr/national_register_fundamentals.htm

Sad to see it falling into ruin like that - someone has removed every doornob throughout the place - perhaps they were glass or detailed brass. Really sad to see the graffiti too ! No respect ...

I agree with Argentium, looks like it was a beautiful place in its' day and is left to crumble. Marked Historic but all the goodies have been stripped either by the state, employees that did or thought they had permission to strip it and then, no detecting but graffiti! Bet there are items hidden waiting to be found and tell more but unless someone tries to find a way to get permission, they may never see the light of day. Or at least until someone decides to build a mall or subdivision there. Don't laugh, never know what might happen nowadays!

Personally, if this place is in the sticks and being overtaken by nature, I think I'd take a chance and hit it regardless of permission.

If the grounds were maintained, indicating the efforts of someone to keep it presentable, then I would probably not. Place is obviously not very secure, judging by the graffiti.

Jeff is right on.

There are entire neighborhoods in my area where every house is on the list designated "historic". Property owner permission is all that is needed to MD. The designation means they cant significantly alter the structure via demolition/construction, landscaping, tree removal, etc.

Detecting, with permission, it's a GO!

I love old mansions, and it so sad that the owner is nowhere to be find. I really search the outside and may inside if the doors are broken and the building is abandoned. Good hunting and good luck.

Man that would be a killer place to renovate. I'd love to labor it back into occupation if it were mine.

My personal experience in hunting old mansions is that they are a waste of time. Seems like rich people didn't get that way by dropping or losing money. I'll take a "regular folks" home or house to hunt over a mansion any day.

yea I don't see those people Having Kids that run around getting Dirty, Climbing trees etc.

Or Having wild beer parties . but they may be the type to be paranoid enough to bury and hide money from friends, family and staff.

Maybe even from IRS & police

Can't say I've ever hunted mansion grounds ,,, This particular one has a history going back to the early 1880's as a lodge, then a summer camp for children.

Certainly has potential over an average house IMO.

Gunsil is right. That entire area was pounded in the 80s and 90s, and other than a few silver coins and a gold pinkie ring, not much of note was ever found. You have to remember that folks have had access to some great machines since the early 1980s, and they knew where to use them.:skullflag:

I live close to Henry Fords estate, wide open to walk around but of course MD not legally possible - I am guessing they would lol if you asked permission to detect, then escort you off the premises.

He was well known to have large social gatherings there, there are some old dilapidated ponds on the grounds [just out of the picture], I have seen pics from back in the day with 100's of socialites gathered around the ponds [which were swimming pools then], granite steps, arches, band stage, the works.
This place is now truly reclaimed by nature, in fact that is exactly what most of the grounds are now outside of the estate itself, a nature preserve. Can still see and walk on the granite steps, some arches are still standing, and portions of the stage still remain last time I was there [been a few years]

Here is Ford with Thomas Edison, Warren G. Harding, and Harvey Firestone somewhere on the grounds - Cabin actually still exists but has been moved extensively over the years due to a nearby college campus.

Ford,_Edison,_Harding,_and_Firestone,_New_York_Times,_1921_525_358.JPG

The field where he was born and raised[about 3 miles from here, not pictured]
is still largely a field believe it or not, that I have detected but have found nothing so far. Ground very hard and clumpy and things are still grown there, so it is either filled with stumps and roots or has stuff growing and can turn into a mud pit quick, tough area to detect. A good % has been developed, probably a matter of time before it all is.

1st shot shows general estate area, quite extensive. Large Ford Made waterfall on the grounds, remains of a couple old boat houses still intact in the vicinity.

2nd pic shows cabin I was talking about, almost certainly the same one pictured above, and almost certainly not the original location

3rd pic shows the pond area where he had alot of social gatherings back in the day, now the home of mosquitoes, groundhogs and frogs. Some of them obviously have been filled in and only the large one remains, too bad. Maybe a safety measure as they filled with stagnant water and people go walking back there unregulated all the time in the summer.

4th pic shows more ruins on the estate - Not sure what this area was for, confidant it had something to do with entertaining large crowds of associates

edit: Pic of the 4 men above is apparently NOT Fords estate but rather from a camping trip in Maryland in 1921.
Area & Inn History - Lake Pointe Inn

There is a pic of him and famous personalities on his estate grounds with the cabin in the background, I'll see if I can dig it up

Just a thought but if the owner's wife and daughter went mad after living there for a period of time, then it is quite possible that mold flourished inside the Castle due to moisture/water intrusion from below the foundation base or the Castle could have been built over a toxic deposit such as Lead or something else. If this is the case, then it would not even be wise to metal detect the property without a face mask.

About every 30 days my wife goes mad for around 5 days or so. Perhaps she has mold in her drawers. :icon_scratch:
