PS...

I wear a couple of rings... which also serve me well in the field... when I turn on I ALWAYS toss one or both down in the sand... and spend a moment or two tuning in finding them.

I have a nickel I keep in my finds pouch as a test. How embarrassing might it be to hunt all day and find nothing then learn you hadn't noticed you's inadvertently notched out too much.

Which I once did with my Minelab. :BangHead:

I have a small strip of lawn area along side my house where I have a gold ring, a quarter, pull tab, and a nickle buried about 4 feet apart. About 5" or so deep. I use it every once in a while just to test my machine or a new set of headphones, new coil or whatever. Sometimes just to see if my discrimination is set how I like. The items have been buried since 04 when I first started detecting.
Also cool when people come over who are curious about detecting. I let them "discover" the gold ring.
