Howdy. Has anyone on here ever recovered a toad during it's hibernation period? My buddy did so yesterday in a cornfield and it's scared the heck out of him! He was digging some iron and something began to move in the hole and he let out a shout I could hear even with my headphones on at a distance. The toad was not scathed in the recovery and did "wake" up. We carefully placed it back into the hole and loosely put some dirt back over it. That has got to be a first time experience for my friend and I. One we'll never forget I reckon. Kurios1:tongue3:

Yes, I find toads and salamanders that are groggy from hibernation when I do bottle digs. I just cover them back up. Don't pick them up because the heat from your hands will wake them up prematurely. They'll know when it's time to come out and play!

Absolute worst thing to dig into is a yellow jacket nest. I have seen my friend do it 2 times. When ever he starts screaming and running I go in the opposite direction for a few minutes...d2
