Lyme's is some serious stuff. Two women in my old town had it. One lost half her body weight and the other was misdiagnosed for five years or so. They thought she had all kinds of other stuff wrong with her.

I also know a dog guy who had to put down three spaniels that were crippled by Lyme's.

I like to tuck my pants into my socks so the ticks can't climb in the cuff. And, DEET repellant. 25% sprayed on everything but my eyes and even on my hat. Its the little deer ticks that carry Lyme's around here. They are smaller than a wood tick, maybe the size of a seseme seed, black on top and red on the underside.

From what I heard, the ticks catch the Lyme's from mice. Come to think of it, no cats in my old town. :dontknow:

Thanks for that, have a friend that struggeld years with it.

Check for ticks when you come back and remove them asap, the spread the disease mostly when they sucked full. Check ankles and groin area esp. (yeah they go up in your trousers and down your arms).

And also, an updated tetanus shot is a very nice thing if you are digging!

My wife tested positive after tick bites She had the tell-tale bullseye rash twice. The dog tested positive as well. We have sheep at a hobby farm and come in with assorted ticks on our clothing all spring, summer and fall or the dog brings them in. My wife (and dog) had the antibiotic treatment. I tested negative.

We have church friends who have been knocked flat with the more-advanced symptoms.

I have been pleased with Sunsect combination bug repellent & sunscreen. It's an odorless cream and works well as a repellent (black-flies and mosquitoes as well). It's 20% DEET and I can put it near my eyes (where the #&$%&! blackflies will try and get behind my glasses). This keeps them from landing.

Ticks can carry many bacteria, viruses, fungi and protozoans all at the same time and transmit them in a single bite. The most common tick-borne diseases in the United States include Lyme disease, babesiosis, anaplasmosis, ehrlichiosis, relapsing fever, tularemia, Rocky Mountain spotted fever (RMSF).

Should you ever be diagnosed with ehrlichiosis, it has now developed a mutated version that effects the heart lungs and diaphragm. It is like lime disease on steroids. In my case I was in intensive care for months and have only about 50 % of my cardiovascular/breathing remaining. As they said above, it is nothing to play with seek good medical advise if the symptoms begin. Both lime and this have the same beginning symptoms.

A Beware section would be cool for Lyme , & other Insect & animal born Diseases .

While Lyme disease is or was the past few years almost non-existent in my area of the SE , I hear it's still rampant in the NE.

It's strange why ( I'm just using #'s off the top of my head ) ,someone correct me if I am wrong or someone who can post up to date stats .
If I recall something like a Dozen or so cases a year are 'Reported' for GA or TN while in the NE it 's Hundreds a year.
Also funny how it just popped up in the Town of Lyme CT back in the Day.

In other parts of the country we now have 'west Nile' & some of the Old Time Diseases still around.

My spelling & typing won't let me explain myself better on Medical Subjects but That said is Good for everybody to be Aware of the Dangers out there.

In college I took a course in medical parasitology. Worse things exist in the real world than Hollywood has conjured up.

I'm not a doctor. I don't even play one on television, and I've never stayed at a Holiday Inn Express.

I do have Lyme disease though and have had it for 17 years now. I can state, with certainty, that Lyme disease is something you don't want. There is a lot of false information spread about Lyme disease - some of that false information stems from the medical field.

Among the Lyme community (people infected with Lyme disease) the CDC is not typically trusted. I do not trust the CDC. I would caution others to take what the CDC says with a good dose of skepticism.

Because we're a treasure/metal detecting forum and not a medical advice forum.

I love you guys - but I leave diagnosis, medicine and treatment to the professionals.

Hi Charlie; Yup, but We here can talk about it amongst ourselves. I will NEVER recommend putting a Doctors Treatment / Advice over anything said here EVER. THAT is NOT the purpose of it at all. It would be a place where Us diggers can go and talk about it freely. NOT override the Forum Specs at all EVER ok. This stuff hits everyy one of Us here at one time or other. Who knoows maybe We can come up with a great doctor Specialist or something We can go to. I can hardly wait. PEACE:RONB :leprechaun-hat: :leprechaun-hat:

Not too far from Lyme Connecticut in the Long Island Sound is Plum Island, a federal germ and animal disease research laboratory that has a storied life. One theory—compelling but controversial—about the sudden emergence of the disease in Connecticut blames the accidental release of infected ticks during experiments.

A vaccine was released for Lyme disease requiring a series of 2 shots over a period on 1 year if I remember correctly. After I had my shots they stopped the program finding that people who had been givin the vaccine had a 30% chance of advanced stage Arthritis in later life.........

OJ, If this discussion prevents just one more in our hobby from getting infected, it is well worth it. They can stick this kind of data in where ever it will be read and help someone from the getting the disease. That's where it belongs!!!
