Metal Detecting in Aruba. I was staying at the La Cabana off of Eagle Beach. I brought my Whites BeachHunter ID 300, Garrett PRO-Pointer and a small fryer basket for sifting sand. Had a great time but had higher expectations on finds.

Hunted around all the Palapas (Umbrella Huts made of Palm Froms) on Eagle Beach. Found LOTS of Bottle Caps and Can Tabs and the occasional deep buried bear can. It was not until day 2 did I realize that the local currency was made up of STEEL core coins. So, for the rest of my stay I was basically digging all finds and mostly in all metal mode. Also, I should have brought a magnet. Overall I found over $30 Aruba florin coins, $20 US coins, 1 Gold wedding band, 2 small silver 980 toe/child rings and some junk (nails, screws, tent anchors, pot metal jewelry, 1 Panamanian cent, copper earing). I found the wedding band in the about 2 feet of water and the silver rings within 2 feet of each other under a Palapa.

I got up and was on the beach two times at 4am, almost 1 hr before sunrise and detected for about 2hrs then had B-fast. Then went back to the beach and worked the beach later in the day for about 4 hours, then most evenings went back out as the sun was setting for an hour or two. Out of the 10 days I spent in Aruba I only spotted one other person with a MD one time. I think she was using it as an Ice Breaker for conversation, because she walked so fast and was only covering a tiny percentage of the beach. The funny thing is she had the same MD as I had but without a coil cover.

Lessons learned: Bring handle for my scoop for the water and magnet for the local coins.
Water I found it easier to search in the water looking down the beach line but side stepping in and out from the shoreline about 10 feet then taking a step forward and repeat. That way you can work with the waves as they go in and out. Not the normal swing and step method.
