My wife bought me a metal detector for our 2nd anniversary 4 months ago and i have been out every weekend since. I feel that i have been pretty damn fortunate with my finds so far including this nice little guy. A 1868 Shield Nickel, Thanks to google earth, i stumbled across a 1800 's home sight about 2 months ago, that has disintegrated into the ground and hidden amongst the trees. The property surrounding my find is a new housing development. There was one standing fence post with barbed-wire wrapped around it. It was a corner post, that was actually a tree that was still rooted into the ground. With lots of rotted plank wood and pre 1900 red brick that i am pretty sure that it had not even been fired.

I know that i am very fortunate to have found this, because there are a lot of hunters that probably nevee find one of these! I also found these ornamental iron fence/house decor! At the same sight, along with my first pocket spill, unfortunately it was only modern coins, but still stoked about the finds!

Nice job! Woods sites make up 95% of my sites, every now and then one really pays off and will produce a ton of colonial artifacts.

Good job!
Whatta thrill, eh?
And, when you can read the date, that's special.
Hey, there's varieties, and you can see a LOT of detail,
on the other side of the coin, as well....

Love the old nickel Aged and with character. Also one I haven't managed to recover in nearly nine years. Well done on the research and recovery of this fine target.

Same, except it has only been four years for (though I still can't believe it has been that long since I start metal detecting). I have found V-Nickels and my hunting partner dug a two cent piece (which looks very similar to a V-Nickel), but I have never had the honer of digging a shield nickel. The one you found is in better shape than most nickels I find dropped in the 1960's. There is some nice soil where you are at :).
