Some of the least expensive detectors work very well and you want to keep the child interested. Something that does not work is a good way to discourage them.

Perhaps one of the Garrett ACE series, short learning curve, and really good in fact. Friends had bought a Ace 150 for a grandson, I hooked it up, did some show & tell with him, (8 yrs. old) and created a little metal detecting monster.

Don't overlook the power consumption aspect - batteries!

That's what discouraged me most as a child. 8 expensive batteries. At least there are rechargables today though.

I'd throw another vote to the Compadre. Keep it simple yet effective.

I got my son an Xterra 705 and my daughter a Ace 350. A screen was important for them to get interested in what they had found.

That being said, it has been many moons since they have used them.

Good luck. Kids have very short attention spans.

I'd stay away from the Bounty Hunter stuff and go with an ACE. Got a $250(msrp) BH as a throw in to a deal once and it was Junk.

I really appreciate your answers.
I have bought Garrett ACE 150 for my Champ. I read some article about different metal detector and at least i found metaldetectorboss.
For those who want metal detector for kids, i recommend Garrett ACE 150 because I think it's pretty much compatible for kids.
I never forget your help. Specially i thanks to sprailroad.

Blessings

I worked with my Grandkids a couple of months ago, 3 kids aged 8 - 12, and only one had any interest at all, but they were consumed with detecting. She was as interested in rusty nails as coins, anything detected and retrieved was fascinating to her - which drove me nuts. We were using a Harbor Freight 9 function detector, but though it is a capable machine it probably wouldn't take much kid abuse before repairs would be in order. I'd recommend a bit tougher machine, maybe a Tracker IV.

Fisher F2 used, eurotek pro used - they seem to keep value and are fairly cheap 2nd hand.
