First Try at Electrolysis Rust Removal - Old Axe Head (Date?)

Hey all!

Okay, here's my first shot at electrolysis/rust removal. My buddy and I found a whole bunch of iron at a late 1600's farm (horseshoes, tools, spikes, horse bit, etc...) Anyway, here's my initial setup. I swapped the battery charger out for a larger car battery "Jump N' Carry" charger, because this one had an internal fuse that kept tripping off:

I decided to try first on this old axe head. Worked pretty good! Took about 30-35 hours total. Here are the results, before and after:

I slathered this thing in Crisco and baked the axe head at 450 degrees for 45 minutes when finished. It smells delicious!

Anyway, although the farm is ancient, I have no clue how old it is. If anyone is an axe/relic expert, I'd be thrilled to know what you think.

I can tell you that yours has been used for a felling wedge . you did a pretty good job on cleaning.
