That was always one of the theories. It's coll that they were able to test it and figure it out. Good info, very interesting.

Makes me wonder if the inventors of the sub/spar would of known the impact of the explosion under water.

Such a simple explanation given today's technology.

From what I remember reading, the Hunley had sunk before with no injuries or fatalities, but I think this was the first time with their " bomb spar". They probably never thought the concussion could hurt them inside of the sub. They probably thought they were well protected.

I guess they would have never known what happened, must been a few fish floating around after that boom.

The Russians successfully mined the Gulf of Finland in the Crimean War and took out three British ships (HMS Merlin, HMS Firefly and HMS Vulture) a decade before the Civil War started. Using a design by Immanuel Nobel (from the same family whom the Nobel Peace Prize is named).

Actually, I think it sank several time before killing a bunch of men total. Seem to remember it was almost scrubbed because of it. I might be wrong.

water sank it ...right after the underwater shock wave from the explosion breached its seams or killed its crew ...or both

it sank several times during its "development" phase ...and was known as a real "widow" maker ...so much so that it used all "volunteer crews" ...
