It's broken down Degrees, minutes, seconds each degree can be broken down to 60 minutes and each minute down to 60 seconds.

30' = 1/2 degree

Looks like what you have written is taking a degree and dividing it by 100


To convert, you:

  • Subtract the whole number - that is the degrees (12 degrees)
  • Multiply the remainder (.3456) by 60 to find the minutes (20.736)
  • Subtract the whole number - that is the minutes (20 minutes)
  • Multiply the remainder (.736) by 60 to find the seconds (44.16 seconds)

With the decimal, though, it is degrees, minutes and decimal of minutes. 4.0 would be 4 minutes and zero seconds. 2.97 would be 2 degrees and 58.2 seconds (not practical for following a course).

Though I have never heard of fractional headings. Locations and bearings, yes. Headings, no.

Are they headings and distances? 4.0 miles at 50°? (And remember a nautical mile is 6,000 feet).

They are random rocks that read exactly 50°4.0. The other rocks found which had the 200° 2.97 led me to a location to find the last rock with 50° 4.0 . But none of the decimal measurements were adding up for the distance . But they may mean nautical miles like you said so I'll run the formulas on that . Thanks I'll let you know what I find .

The decimal part of a degree is easy to change to minutes. A degree is 60 minutes. If you have, for instance, .50 degree, you have one half of a degree.... 30 minutes. Take the decimal part of a degree and multiply it into 60. Example..... 2.60 degrees is 2 plus .60 times 60 equals 2 degrees and 36 minutes or 2 degrees 36 minutes. This is also done to the minutes and seconds. Did this help? ╦╦Ç

without knowing important details like location of stones, distance and azimuth from each other its all guessing.

The first stone was found . It had IV 13° 4.64 on it . It led me to the next rock which was 13 ° 10 minute drive 5.9 mile drive. This rock had VIII 202° 2.97 which was 7 minute drive 3.7 mile drive . And that's the XII rock with 50° 4.0 but using regular miles it leads me nowhere, usingnautical miles it still leads me nowhere. Does this help any
