I thought there were copper coins minted by variuos mints prior to 1783?

but i am not a coin expert so i must be wrong.

Those were considered to be colonial coinage though, not from when the United States actually became a country. I do think you are kinda right though, I still would consider a Pine shilling an American coin, and even a George halfpenny dug in the U.S..
