Being a teeny bit OCD I catalog my jewelry gold and silver finds in Excel by year, location and specific spots within that location. The specific spots at each location has helped me find patterns of where things are most frequently lost. It has also helped me find spots that other hunters seem to be overlooking or hunting less.

This plus i have rikers style cases for buttons and buckles. I also do the plastic coffee cans of random stuff ive found for when the day comes that i buy jewelry shops glass cases to display stuff in the basement.

Has anyone seen the Doc watson style of catalogging finds? He does an awesome job of doing a map plus pictyres and escriptions of each hunted side then 3 ring binds the pages. Its impresive.

I to use Excell. But a very basic file - I don't need very detailed stuff - as in metal composition.
Here's an example of one file:

Name/Object
Button, older modell
Amount found
1
Details, notes, other:
Floral motif. 1700's. Reported .

Skilling, Coin.
1
Very worn. Reported. Probably 1700's.
1 ÖR SM 1739 (coin)
1Worn, fragile. Reported.
leadbag seal
1Reported. 34g.
Skilling, 1820
1Reported.

I often include depth for future generations, as well as GPS coordinates. Should it ever be a archeological examination of the site, some basic info will be available. This was just a quick translation of a part of the file. Each place I hunt has it's own file, which I update after each hunt.

I also take pictures and save them to files associated with the site they come from. I take the finds themselves and keep them in plastic boxes kind of like the ones you would keep fishing lures in. The real good finds are put into a frame also dedicated to the sites they come from.

Tackle boxes are indeed good for sorting.
