Wow, it’s been ages since I fell for the vague description on eBay.
Just starting out panning and figured I’d get a earth magnet close to quarter size or maybe half dollar sized, something I can do a home brew magnetite remover with a nut driver and a pill bottle. So I see one on eBay (screen capture) and didn’t see exact dimensions, figuring it was a macro photo I figured maybe a quarter in size would be good to try.
Came in today smaller than a dime! I didn’t click the “more details” for the description so I missed “Dimensions: 5/16" in diameter x 1/8" in height.”

Lesson of the day remember read the FULL DESCRIPTION

amazing detail on the magnet photo

Sorry they got you. There is treasure on the roadside. Every hard drive inside of a computers tower contains large rare earth mags. They sre tough to open! Hoodwinked is derived from falconry. Elvis with his hood.

Ended up finding one today online.
Ends up 1.5 inches wide and 3/8ths tall
Should do good with a pill bottle and will give it a whirl with some paydirt I’ve worked down to black sand with a few micro gold I know is in there.
I like the hard drive idea though. I’ll be looking for a old worthless drive.
Where are the magnets in it? Middle spindle ??

Middle spindle is a small stepper motor, so no, the good magnet is under the head arm coil. You need torx bits to take apart a hard drive. The older ones have bigger magnets. The magnet is under the head arm so you need to remove the spindle, platters and head arm to get to it. It's also glued to a piece of metal that's awkward to work with and deflects the magnetism and should be removed. Careful separating the magnet from the metal bracket, the glue will rip the chrome plating off the magnet and if you bend it too much it'll shatter. I've had the best luck with two pairs of pliers holding each end of the bracket bending the metal away from the magnet. You'll ruin a few, but boy they're STRONG!

If you can't find what you're looking for in a computer try Granger. I use to buy them to attach to the side of heavy equipment to temporarily hold down wires and hoses. The ones I bought had a 1/4-20 threaded hole in the middle to attach an eyebolt. A 1 1/2" in dia. Was rated to hold 150lb. Super strong. So strong a 3" high pressure wash hose could not tear them loose. Good luck.

I had recovered two sets of magnets out of mainframe computers. Sort of kidney shaped, 2" x 1" x 1/2", they have the strength that I use them to pop out dents in fenders on the trucks and cars. In Novateck doors and windows there's little sq. magnets that help with the closure of both. These magnets only being a 1/8" thick but are of a rare earth compounds.

Well buying one and ended up getting another both had poor quality control.
Chipped edges. They will work with a pill bottle as a home brew magnetite remover.
But as for the quality control, it was a company says contact amazon. Amazon handled the issue to my satisfaction.
