I am hoping that someone on TNET is knowledgeable of Mushrooms, especially the edible ones and can identify the Mushrooms in the pics below. The tree stump, I believe is a type of Elm but am not totally sure and all of the Mushrooms are either growing on the stump or from the roots and/or rot from the stump. I am good at identifying herbs in the woods but have never been good at identifying edible and non-edible Mushrooms.

Thanks in advance!

Those first ones on the tree might be popinki mushrooms - edible.

Or

False Popinki mushrooms- extremely toxic

Grizzly Killer mushrooms - extremely toxic

Screaming Death Rot mushrooms - extremely toxic

I made up those last three - but with a point.

I have two mushroom identifying guide books and there is only one I dare collect (Morels) . Even they have a "false morel" that is only mildly poisonous. It seems every edible has at least two look-alike toxic mates.

Best bet is to go out with someone who knows edible mushrooms.

I believe you are correct that the ones growing directly on the stump are Polyporus squamosus (Dryad's Saddle or Pheasant Back) mushrooms. I read that this mushroom has no toxic look-a-like, so that is good. If someone knows otherwise, please let me know. Thanks!

I was leaning towards the Honey Mushroom or in Russian, the Popinki mushroom. Still, I know I should not try any of these until I know for sure.

Charlie’s “might” ID of the first mushroom may well be correct. Please (in line with the rest of his advice) don’t eat any mushroom not ID’s by a reputable expert - and then not till about 2 days after your expert has eaten a bunch of it!

Here’s the “popinki”

I’d say to feed it to your dog first....but -

Most dogs don’t like mushrooms

Dogs don’t react like people to stuff

There are laws against it - for a good reason

Dogs are our friends

i tried armillaria mellea before and i did not like it.

the other one, p. squamosus, is also not a value to dish.

in the spring, morels are the worthy selection.

in the autumn, lactarius delicious, boletus edulis are also safe and delicious ones.

by the way, it is rather important to learn the dangerous ones. there are ten or twelve kinds you could possibly meet, better to learn and stay away. you should also stay away from Lbm (all kinds of little brown mushrooms).

plus, only eat the mushrooms you are sure about. when in doubt, throw it out.

Q: What does flying an aircraft, hunting mushrooms, and performing an appendectomy have in common?

A: You could probably pull all of them off successfully using just internet advice, and they will all hurt quite a bit if you make a mistake. You're really better off having an expert present to assist you personally.

Here in Jersey we only pick mushrooms at the base of an Oak tree.

The best looking mushrooms always seem to be the deadly ones! I like to kid around, but I'm not eating any mushrooms in the woods! Not worth the risk.
