For many of us, probably most of us, we have the hope of finding Spanish Silver or a Gold coin. The reality is that finding a gold coin is very slim but possible. But the Spanish Silver seems more obtainable or at least possible because of the sheer amount of the old silver that was circulated. Obviously some areas of the country are more likely to find the Spanish silver than others but like a gold coin, they can turn up nearly anywhere. I couldn't believe I had found my 1st Walker and was in a state of shock for a minute or so, don't know what I would do to find an actual Spanish Silver or a Gold coin. if you respond to this, a picture of your find would be very nice. Thank you very much from still searching...DL

I went to NY last April and hunted with a bunch of TNet guys (Scrappy, Eastcoasthunter21, Bartek, Treblehunter, Loco-Digger & Triplnickel555). I was specifically looking for my first seated or Spanish coin. They took me to a place where they had found Spanish & seated silvers... it took me 2 days, but I found one. It is beat up and folded in half, but still AWESOME to me.

I’m interested in what denoted Spanish silver apart from Mexican silver. I know mine was minted in Mexico, does it still count as Spanish silver?

Spain had mints in several countries; if your coin was minted before 1810 I would consider it Spanish silver although Spain didn't officially recognize Mexico as a sovereign nation until 1821. Spanish silver was legal tender in America (before the US was the U.S.) for 250 years! I guess that's why we find some of it.

I found a piece last year, my third year metal detecting. I was shocked. I had never seen Spanish silver before but instantly knew what it was.

I found a 1829 8 Mexican Spanish Reales in a sidewalk strip in front of a lawyers office in the Historic part of town 6 months into detecting. I was totally hooked since. IMG_1998.JPG IMG_1997.JPG

Since then, after 3 1/2 years of digging everyday, IMG_2538.JPG I just found my 1801 Spanish Mexican 1/2 Reales last week!!!!! When I saw those pillars I almost died. That for asking a question for those who have been lucky enough to have found one. Yours will come my friend [emoji1317] IMG_2536.JPG

No silver dollar nor Spanish/Mexican silver as well, the dust on the wish list is so old it might as well be buried.
Though I did score a gold coin on one of trips across the pond. Saw it in the plug, and the plug rolled back over into the hole and I knew right there that I had a gold coin.

Celtic gold full stater - Clacton type 6.43g, 20.30mm Ref Hobbs 142British A1 or E stater. This coin is from the same obverse die that was later used to strike the Waldingfield type, VA 1462, ABC 2335. It’s from an unrecorded reverse die with an uncertain symbol below the horse and is midway between the Westerham and Waldingfield types, if anything closer to the latter, which is extremely rare (not the Clacton type though this particular coin is very similar)

I dug three half reales my first year of metal detecting (2014), but haven't found one since! The dates are 1773, 1776 and 1784. They're pretty beat up, but still a thrill to find them.

I have found both silvers and golds. Now, I have been looking for stuff in the dirt over 50 years, so please keep that time frame in mind. First Spanish silver was back in 1989 or something like that from the Brandywine Battlefield, a holed 1 reale. I found one more and several cut ones in the next couple years. First gold coin was a British Guinea 1774, posted here from 2011. Found the ugliest little gold Mexican coin I think in 2015 and last year my first American gold a $5 piece. Also posted here....somewhere. I have three Spanish silvers in the last month. One from the beach and two from a nearby farm. Before that the last Spanish silver was....uh...I don't remember. Honestly. They don't grow on trees. I got one last year and one in 2011 or 2012. We have an enormous amount of old sites here. All three gold coins came from beaches, 3 different beaches. 1 is a shipwreck coin as are two of the Spanish silvers. It's still a short list. Some folks do much, much better. IMG_0002.JPG

Smokey-Cat : 3 gold coins for your part of the USA is QUITE A FEAT ! You deserve much bragging-rights. There are many hard-core east coast hunters with SCORES of old (colonial, seateds, LC's) coins, that have YET to find their first gold coin. Or perhaps to have one. But to have 3 so-far from the east coast, is quite a feat. Congratz.
