Was in a local grocery and was waiting in line behind four people. There was a man trying to explain things to what as I found out was a new employee at the register. The first person was handled all right and was on their way but as the second person stepped forward the loud speaker came to life. The man was needed because a truck had just shown up at the back of the store and he was needed right now. The man shook his head as he glanced around and then told the young woman that he was sorry but they were very short handed at the moment and she would just have to do the best that she could until he got back. Immediately a credit card was handed to the woman and she was at a loss as what to do next. So as the two figured out what was needed to be done, the man in front of me began griping and griping loudly about how stupid and slow she was. He was getting louder as he turned to me and asked what I thought? I looked at him and answered, "You know, if this is the worst thing that happens today, I think that it is a pretty good day." His jaw dropped as he stared at me and then threw down his things and stomped off. The woman was about into tears as I now stepped forward and she thanked me for my comments. I responded with "I really doubt that he was perfect at his first time at any new job. You are doing just fine, it is what it is. Smile, it will get better but there will always be jerks to deal with." Her face turned to a smile as she handed me my change and she thanked me again as I left. In this crazy fast fast world of today, remember that people have feelings too.

Good on you for probably helping her make the decision to give the job a second chance, and come back again tomorrow. That jerk probably would have ruined her day for something that was TOTALLY out of her hands. Witnessing things like this really brighten the day of everyone involved!

Sorry to be the devils advocate here, but in all honesty, the store is to blame for the customers perception, NOT the customer himself. You pay a premium to a store, you expect good, solid customer service.

While I understand, the person was new and thrust into a situation she was unprepared for, the store manager should of been made aware that there were waiting customers and the a truck can be unloaded later. This is not the new person's fault, but the store manager's.

I also understand that berating the cashier is wrong and that as a HUMAN being you have a responsibility to conduct yourself in a respectable manner, you also have the RIGHT and deserve good customer service. THAT is what you are paying for.

B3y0nd3r - I'll advocate that this particular customer's "right" to "good customer service" terminated when he made personal insults towards the store employee.

At the risk of sounding pedantic, I'll add that we have many rights under the Constitution or whichever national laws apply are but there's no such thing as a "Right to Good Customer Service"; customer service (in the modern sense) is merely what businesses provide to enhance the product sold.

Decades of conditioning by our consumerist society has bred skewed customer expectations for how they're to be treated..we see them making news when they assault an airline hostess or McDonald's worker - driven by a deluded sense-of-entitlement to "good customer service".

The customer should have been escorted out of the store and asked to not return.

Kudos to you, you old fart. :notworthy: It was a great act of compassion when you pointed out the facts to that griper. You are my kind of people and seem to know how to diffuse the situation.

Ever take a moment and tell the people cleaning the public bathrooms that you really appreciate their work? it takes them totally by surprise, most tell me that they had never been thanked for doing the thankless job. Most of the time, they thank me for thanking them. A little encouragement can go a long long ways. There are a lot of thankless jobs out there, just saying. DL

Guess you never heard of the consumer bill of rights:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Consumer_Bill_of_Rights

This document does not say a customer has the right to yell profanity at an employee as a way to express their displeasure for the services they received.

Here is an excerpt from the link:

Capture.JPG

It states they have the right to take their grievances to court (underlined), if any of their other rights are not upheld.
It does say the consumer has the right to be heard, but i doubt this is what they meant.
It also states that all consumers (circled) have a right to live and work in a non threatening environment.
That jerk stepped all over everyone else's rights when he berated that poor employee, and thus negated his own rights.
Sorry, but if anyone talked that way to anyone in front of me, they will get the exact same treatment.
Pull a manager aside and voice your frustrations in private, now you are expressing the rights JFK set in place all those years ago.

LOL it wasn't me that did it.

"This document does not say a customer has the right to yell profanity at an employee as a way to express their displeasure for the services they received. "

If you read my original post, I agreed with you. He has a right to air his issues, however he did it the wrong way. I am not sticking up for him, I am sticking up for the consumer.

Too often in this country, consumers get pushed around and in fact, Americans as a whole are becoming too docile in regards to our basic human rights. You can be angry about this guy's actions and rightly so, however, I feel the need to look at all sides of the issue.
What would I have done if I were that man? I would of confronted the manager and take it up the chain if necessary. Picking on a cashier does nothing but make your case look weak.

We are human beings and we have a right to complain, to protest. If you give up that right you cease to exist(Jack Lemon prisoner of second avenue).
