What does it mean to be a “Professional Treasure Hunter”?

I find this amusing enough to post it here.
To be a “Professional”, you normally have to work in a field of study that requires formal schooling and recognition of some sort. So I looked it up..

A "professional" at anything means it's how you earn your living. Doesn't mean someone is good at doing it though, but it's how you supposedly get your bread and butter. Lots claim to be "professionals" at something, but then on the other hand many may be poor at the occupation they have chosen.

A Professional - makes a consistent living wage from THing, Semi-Pro - makes some of their living from THing, Hobbyist has fun and occasionally adds income from their pursuit of THing. Mel Fisher was unarguably a professional from his finds, and from another angle so was Stu Auerbach from equipment sales, and Karl Von Mueller from book sales. IMHO, but YMMV.

Yes, a professional gets paid for what they do. And you are correct, how good you do it is irrelevant. Case in point: A medical doctor is a professional, but as we can testify to some are not very good at what they do.

That's one of those uncomfortable implications that I referred to. Another example would be a person doing TV shows about searching for treasure without actually finding any. Like it or not, that guy is a professional treasure hunter.

Karl von Mueller made far more money finding treasure than he did publishing books and articles.

He wrote to help others. And he sure did that!

My reference was to the writer W.C. Jameson who styles himself a "Professional Treasure Hunter," has been named to the Professional Treasure Hunters' Hall of Fame [?], etc., etc.
