This is on a property from the late 1800's. A co-worker was describing it to me and I thought it might be a well. It's on the backside of the property.

Opening to pump out the septic system maybe? Put your nose down to it and take a sniff. Seriously, that smell lasts forever.

Thanks for the reply. Property owner said they've found some broken old bottles and pottery buried.

I'm thinking maybe undergroung fuel oil tank. Try shining a light or lower a string with a weight to determine depth.

Seriously though, never stick your nose in anything unknown and take a whiff, you dont know what could be in there.
