With the advancement of smart phones, it will eventually become a cashless society. In the future no more coins will be minted, meaning at one point in the future history, coins will stop at a certain time by future metal detectorist.

What are your thoughts on this reality?

Been that way for me right along. The Gummint stopped making the coins I look for around 1964. Clad keeps me in batteries; but rechargeables would solve that.

I not only look for coins. I also enjoy gold n silver rings. Gold chains bracelets, golg teeth those things make the hunt more exiting than coins. Even if there are no coins im still going to metal detect. Instead of keeping me busy with coins i will find pulltabs and jewlery.

That's the main reason banks want a cashless society

No, no, no. That's what they want you to think.

The main reason they want a cashless society is because they want to track and TAX everything you do. Cash makes it easy for you to pay me, face to face, without Uncle Sam getting his cut. Not so with electronic methods of money transfer.

I wonder how many lives would be saved if stores did not accept cash? Think about all the bank and store clerks killed every year over chump change.

There will always be something to find. The tech will continue to evolve.
In a cashless society everyone will need an I.D. Maybe we could get a handle on voter fraud then?
If your earnings go to your acount and there is no cash allowed, this does give our self-annointed overlords a greay deal of power. You can have access to your money shut off in a heart beat for any reason
or no reason.
I suspect there will always be barter. And there are still many people on this planet who have never heard of cards or banks.
But the world will change eventually.

When I returned to detecting, my goal was to find all kinds of coin. I quickly tired of that endeavor and turned to finding thing of historical value so that I could share them with the persons of the area in which they were found. As an engineer by trade and an engineering teacher, I have never been a big history guy but that is beginning to change. It's good to know where we came from ... may tell us where we are heading.

Dave gives the best example. We can't even convince the government to get rid of the worthless penny, so how are we ever going to convince them to go cashless? The only reason we still have pennies is because the politicians are getting "perks" from the mining companies. Why else would you make something and take a loss on every one you made? Just getting rid of all the coins would cost the politicians billions in payola, so that's never going to happen.

Well the penny has been gone for years now in Canada.

Everyone is right, but it’s still hard to believe that one day a child will say the words, “What was money?”

The child will say, What is a metal detector?

With IOS12 being release next month, Apple will be dropping support on your IOS9. Time to upgrade to newer hardware.

I think they will continue to print bills and mint coins, they are steering the herd to use plastic in the majority of transactions but they have to feed the illusion of money with physical coins and bills. I just wish they would make the cents out of cardboard which would reflect their true value, lol. Actually drop the cents and nickels, and go to a dime as the smallest coin then round up any amount to 10c. Then drop the paper dollar and replace it with a dollar coin. A $2 & $5 coin would be great too. The present $1 don't circulate as people prefer the paper, but the coin is more durable and in the long run more cost effective as compared to the paper.

There are people today already happily accepting the mark. In the future one will not be able to buy or sell without it.
Not looking forward to that.

Tell us more about what exactly this mark is. If you don't know (because the original reference source was not clear, perhaps), that's fine, but admit that you're not sure. The reason that I'm requesting clarification is because people have been worried about that mark for around 1500 years now, and they haven't yet accurately described what it is. In fact, every time that someone has pointed it out during that time, they've been wrong. Going forward, I'd like people to be very clear about what that mark is before they start complaining about it because spinning folks up over fake news serves no useful purpose.

Don't hold your breath. I have less than zero use for fake money.

Our fake dollar bills, or our fake electronic dollars? They're both Monopoly money.

Dave gives the best example. We can't even convince the government to get rid of the worthless penny, so how are we ever going to convince them to go cashless?

But that's not really what I said. It will happen, just not with the current generation of politicians. 30-50 years from now, the people running this country (and indeed, the world) will be people that have no attachment to cash, as will be the people voting for them. The cent will be long gone by then, but everything else will go at that point too - coins, bills, what have you.

So will people have to rent debit machines when hosting garage/yard sales in this cashless society?

Or Paypal. Or swipe the buyer's credit card on your tablet or even phone. Or if you want to go really old school, you could take a personal check. That's not cash. How long have personal checks been around for now?

Don't trust personal checks? I don't blame you. I don't like those either. Money orders are probably safer...and those are also not cash, and how long have those been around for?

I don't understand why some folks think that cashless commerce is somehow new. Personal checks go back at least as far as the Roman Empire. They've existed in the US for...well, pretty much since the start. And do you know why some of those colonists were issuing and accepting the contemporary equivalent of personal checks? Because they were more convenient than cash.

Oh, electronic payments with your zombie phones? Sure, you want 25 cents for this? I'll send a quarter to your e-mail right now.....
Sound stupid?

Very. What does one buy for $0.25 these days?

Now look at everyone tapping their chips or phones. Groomed perfectly by the financial institutions.

Groomed for what?

"We pay for everything on our credit card so that we get the points reward." Yeah, the banks and credit companies are making boatloads of money!

And what does that cost the person using the credit card? We already know that they get the points and rewards, but what does it actually cost them, assuming that they pay their balance off in full each month?

If they don't enter it into the till correctly, then they have no idea as they cannot add simple math.

Ironically, cashiers dealing with cash are probably the last remaining people in the developed world that have an actual need to know how to do simple math. (And really, they shouldn't. The register ought to be doing that for them.) I've argued before, and will argue again, that it should be dropped from the curriculum in public school. It's an obsolete skill for anyone other than a specialist.

If they force me to get a zombie phone to pay for everything, then I'm off to live in the woods AGAIN! Screw this world!!!!

There is always a certain amount of irony involved when someone gets on the internet and threatens to drop off the grid. (Again.)

No, no, no. That's what they want you to think.

The main reason they want a cashless society is because they want to track and TAX everything you do. Cash makes it easy for you to pay me, face to face, without Uncle Sam getting his cut. Not so with electronic methods of money transfer.

They, as in the banks, or they, as in Uncle Sam? Because Uncle Sam is actually all right with cash. He really wants you to start using dollar coins in fact, as it would save him a lot of money if we all started doing so. But we refused, and now he's sad.

Seriously. If you love cash and you love America and you love metal detecting, start using those damned $1 coins and get everyone that you know to start using them too. The government has your back on this.

Well the penny has been gone for years now in Canada.

And good riddance. (To the Canadian penny, not to Canada. Although BC has been pissing us off lately. If you could convince them to put out their fires and stop making Seattle look like Beijing, that would be great.)
