Is this a good spot?!

Hi, I'm new to metal detecting and am wondering if a 1909 park is a good place to find silver and gold and jewelry. It's not a huge park but a good size, it get a good amount of traffic. I saw a guy metal detecting there once. Also, what are the best places to look? Under trees? Picnic areas? Woody areas? By the river?

Hello Mvgirl,

That place sounds like a great place to hunt. IMHO: the place has been hit hard over the years, so you need to think outside the box. All of the places you mentioned are good, consider the bushes and heavily overgrown areas if you can get in. Try to get an aerial view of the place from years ago and compare to modern. This will give you an idea of the park shrinkage over the years by the trees, brush...etc.

Exactly what Bama Billy said!
Metal detectorists are prone to the "Deer sticking to the same trails" syndrome and tend work the same old ground over and over again.
Take Assiniboine Park for example....
Getting pretty hammered! BUT, take a look at the photos of when they built the park and the land was all bald flat prairie.
So that means that all the bushes there now were not there in the early days.
Every year in the spring I pull out quite a bit of goodies from the woods.

Right against the base of a big tree near the river, I found this coin spill......

Didn't have to get a new fancy detector, just had to think a little outside the box.
Even in the common areas, look for heavy bottle cap/trashy areas and pull out all the "iffy" signals among the trash.
Your chances are slim to none if you work the clean, quiet areas. You gotta work what no one else wants to work!

NETR.com. The screen has copyright writing on the screen but you can figure that out by scrolling in and out. Use the overlap of slide overlap menu. Aerial photos start on this site in about 1960 up to today. Once you get the hang of it you will find old parks, homes and other structures that were there but not anymore. There's several books in the public libraries about the history of Winnipeg parks that I've read over the years.
One book covers them all and there's a few about certain ones like Kildonan, St. Vital, and Assiniboine for example.
Always check the 971 (Dewy decimal) sections, especially at the Millennium Library. The Manitoba Room (4th floor) there is excellent.

Thanks! You found those coins at assiniboine park?? Awesome!!! I only have a bounty hunter jr MD... only $80. I really really want to buy a good one but will have to wait till next year. But I've found six silver things with it; a silver horse brooch, three silver coins (oldest 1919 silver dime like your pictures), and two silver rings.

1870 til 1919,, Canadian Silver Dimes to Half Dollars were 92.5 % silver.
1920 til 1967,, Canadian Silver Dimes to Half Dollars were 80% silver.
So any park built and used before 1967 is a good place to search for Silver Coins.

It shows current and what they looked like years ago. We the slide feature. Then you can overlap the two. It's really nice once you get the hang of it but there are other good sites good as well.
