Ive been looking online for the past hour and a half and everybody just glosses over the fact Remington even manufactured ammo. I suspect one of two things, Remington has made ammo since cartridges have been around or they didn't produce ammo until they merged with UMC in 1912. Does anybody know when Remington started making ammo?

Cool follow up question then, is Remington’s U headstamp a reference to Umc just like Winchester uses H

That's a trick question. The group that owned Union Metallic Cartridge Co. since 1866 (Schuler, Hartley and Graham) bought Remington in 1888 - so, technically, UMC owned Remington. Remington/UMC later bought Peters - another ammunition manufacturer.

So, Remington never produced cartridge ammo. Remington/UMC did. ;-)

So they were bought in 1888 then continued under separate companies until 1912? Or is there conflicting info out there

I know they produce ammo in batches and may go several years between making certain calibers. They are probably geared up right now for military contracts and that's why ammo is so hard to find.
But to answer the question, I don't know.

Remington and UMC were separate companies owned by Hartley and Graham who also owned Winchester Repeating Arms of New Haven. In 1912 Union Metallic Cartridge Company and Remington were merged to create Remington UMC.
Here's a link to more on the subject: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Remington_Arms
