Minelab xterra, Whites DFX, Notka Makro Simplex. Folks the price don’t mean everything, the question is are you willing to put in the time to learn the machine, experience will pay off I guarantee it.

Almost all handheld GPS units lay down a track of where you have been. You can also download you tracks for your records and research. If you have an I pad or phone the Gaia app is good where you can choose sat view or old topos. If your Ipad dosent have a gps in it you can purchase a Garmin Glo ll that will give you real time location linked via Bluetooth. For handheld IMO Garmin units work fantastic. My 76C is waterproof and even floats. Simple to use also. Great research tool, I will go on Google Earth do my research, mark the location, load it it the handheld and I am off to my next adventure. It will put me within 10’ of my target. 163E98FB-DA07-4C02-B0D4-34E4F8C30A02.jpeg B97E51FA-9D8B-40F9-814F-4FC5789991FD.jpeg

I have been using Back Country Navigator on my Android for years. Works great. Basic version was free. "Pro" is just a few bucks.
