I have a S & W 629 6" .44 Mag. It's a handful. Full house loads are difficult to control. Not for sissies. I like shooting .44 SPCL rounds in mine. That seems to be about right for me. It will knock down bowling pins at 100 yds. Gary

I have a S&W 629 6” .44 mag. I bought it for side arm when I’m in bear country. I haven’t shot it yet but I know it’s gonna be tough when/if I do.

For other than bear country, I have a Taurus .357 4in. I love it.

Love my Vaquero .44 because it will drop a wild boar at 30-yards with no problem at all. Traumatic shock baby!

Have you found reasonable .44 SPCL factory loads? Or do you reload these?

I also have the 629 but mine is the Mountain Gun with 4" barrel. I always wanted to hunt wild bbq with mine.

I've owned a couple (5-1/2" Ruger Redhawk) and still have a custom 7-1/2" bull barrel and 10" octagonal barrel for my Contenders. It's a GREAT close range hunting caliber for deer & smaller.

My SSK "chopped" (from a Super 14" bull barrel) and crowned 7-1/2" Contender I have carried for decades as a back-up when hunting regular season with single-shot muzzleloaders. I used to be able to roll coffee cans at 100 yards with this when my eyes were better and hands less shaky. Small white bead front and a "U" notch rear sight. I had this barrel reduced so it is the same size as a 6" revolver (and fits Uncle Mike) holsters for belt or shoulder holster carry. It's also much lighter than the Redhawk was. One good shot!

The recoil-sensitive sometimes trade one in after firing it as little as one time. These can be bargains as used guns.

I really like a combo of revolver and carbine, both chambered for .44.

I have two frames and a bunch of barrels - including a 21" .223 carbine version (my favorite coyote medicine). Even a vent-rib .410/.45 Colt. I see lunatic prices asked on GunBroker and assume that they have appreciated since I bought mine! I think I paid $179 new in the box when I bought mine. ;-) The 10" barrel I have is full-octogonal and they didn't make those very long. I know why. It is dime thick at the muzzle and weighs vert little. With a full .44 Mag load it whips back fiercely. VERY unpleasant to shoot. Unbelievable how much different the heavier but shorter barrel shoots. have scoped .22 LR and .357 Mag 10" barrels and they get a lot of play as well. It was a great design. Never got into the Encore - much stronger design.

I have a s&w model 29 44 mag, Dirty Harry style with 6 inch barrel.
It's my go to woods and camping gun. I always thought 44s would be crazy to shoot but it's very smooth and controllable.
People are always shocked when they shoot 44s that they arent what was expected. They are nice and accurate pistols.
My wife's 357 and my 45 acp kicks harder.

Before I quit hunting, I used my Ruger carbine in 44 mag. Does an excellent job as a brush gun.

If you a hand-loader you can load the 44 Magnum from mild to wild. It's a very versatile cartridge, and capable of taking everything from mice to moose when properly loaded.

Parted with a .44 Mag. and went to .357.
Now a .44 Mag. Blackhawk found it's way home...

A versatile round.

Love it for hunting, I use a Ruger Super red hawk 8-3/8 inch for white tail deer.
