The bomb lance fragment, left, patented in 1879, was removed from the neck of a bowhead whale.

A 50-ton whale caught off the Alaskan coast was found to have an antique weapon embedded in its neck, evidence that it survived a similar hunt more than a century ago.

The bowhead whale, captured last month, had been swimming around with a three and a half inch long arrow-shaped fragment embedded deep in its blubber estimated to be between 115 and 130 years old.

The find gives researchers rare insight into the precise age of the whale, a fact usually approximated by examining amino acids in the eye lenses. Although it is rare to find a whale over a century, experts say the oldest were close to 200 years old.

Fascinating! Gods creations are amazing:icon_thumleft:.. I didn’t read the entire story.. but how would one know some nut didn’t try killing it a few months or years ago with an antique harpoon?? Maybe the scientists can tell from how the wound grew back? It is curious

Amazing story! I think they have also found whales in modern times with native harpoons stuck in them that dated to the 1800's as well.

Very cool, reminds me of the stories of giant ancient Alligator Snappers being caught and found to contain Civil War era bullets embedded in their shells. Thanks for sharing!

A whale is not caught like a fish. How do you "catch" a 50 ton whale? Was it killed? I can't quite figure out this story.

I saw one riding one of those electric carts in the grocery store..She had a neck brace on..that's the only reason I know they have necks.
