IMHO: I would suggest creating a test bed in your back yard. Different soil conditions around the country will cause the numbers to be slightly different values. Also, you need to learn the tones (I believe it has 5-tones). Hunting by tone is the best way to hunt. A fun way to learn the tones and the machine is to go to a park...etc. a dig everything. This will give you an idea of how your region affects the detector operation and as a bonus you will learn the target ID's.
