I know we have all discussed the church hunting thing. Here's my ? I found a an old abandoned farm house in he middle of some corn fields. I can't seem to locate who farms these fields. Would you or have you MDed places like this without contacting an owner? I quess you could always play dumb if you were approached, which given this location I find doughtful, but....

I'm not sure where you are located Brian but around here if you want to know who owns or leases farmland the easiest way to find out is go to the nearest cafe where the farmers have coffee. Introducing yourself and getting to know these guys will get you a lot more respect and probably more places to hunt that you didn't know about. It would sure beat getting escorted off of private property and all the hard feelings that might happen. Detecting this place without permission and getting caught could keep you from getting to hunt other places as well. Maybe buying a couple cups of coffee and a donut or a peice of pie could turn out to be a pretty good investment. Good luck and HH, Charlie.

What? detect an abandoned spot in the middle of nowhere? Sheesk what's next? Justify murder? By no means can you do it! Even if you research, and find out the owner's themselves have abandoned it, and aren't even around anymore. Don't you know that you can only detect your backyard WITH your wife's permission? tsk tsk.

Yep. Get permission. It sometimes takes me several tries to locate a landowner. That's why I have many, many different sites going at the same time. If I don't catch one person at home, I ask another person that owns a CW site, old house site, etc a few miles away. I try to schedule sites in the same general area to decrease my driving time. In rural areas, you'll create quite a stir by being on someone's property without their consent. You'll probably lose all credibility with others in that area that own old sites as well--and you'll get a "no" from them. Plus you run the risk of getting kicked off or shot at--and this will probably all take place right after you dig that first great coin out of the ground. In addition, you'll be looking over your shoulder all the time--which is no way to hunt. Bottm Line: Get permission or don't go.

I totally agree with you guys. I was just curious. I have never searched other peoples property without permission. Have had talks with a few farmers here. The last guy I talked to was closing shop..sold his farm land & home, which is very common in my area of late (Southeastern PA).

Did anyone catch my satire? (ie.: "what's next? Justify murder?"). I hunt abandoned spots, if in the middle of no where. Or blighted inner city old-town vacant lots, if they just scraped them, etc....

I have plenty of the same type places around here. Usually if you go to a real estate office they always have a current plat map book and it will have the owners name on it. Find their name in the phone book and contact them. If you can't locate them, forget it and move on. I've had to move on a few times and then driving by during harvest season, I spotted the farmer picking corn. Usually pays off just to stop him and ask permission. Most of the farmers thought I was nuts and said to knock myself out.
The first time I did what you are thinking of doing turned out bad. I figured middle of nowhere and no houses around, wrong, the landowner drove by and saw me and kicked my butt off of his property. That was about 20 years ago and never trespassed since.

think about this... it looks abandoned until someone catches you on there,you said that fields surround it ,do this to the wrong person you could be under one of those Fields,some people get very pissed!!! when people do things like that, if you read some of the old posts on here you will find out how unnerving it is to get a gun put in your face....always do the right thing.find out who owns it,and save your self some really big problems.mike

Another advantage of talking to the owner that hasn't been mentioned in this thread - often they may point you to other likely areas and give you an idea of which spots on the land may have had structures or activity at one time. They know the immediate area better than you can hope to.
