Well, there is a lot of distance between that speaker on the detector and your ear. With headphones, that distance is shortened quite a bit and there is less chance that outside noise like traffic and wind will distort the signal of the target.

I agree and it also improves battery life especially if your unit has a set volume.

Tone ID or Threshold?

I know for a fact if you are using a threshold detector you can miss deep signals.

I never detect without headphones and as far as I am aware, no serious hunter does either.

Small deep targets are just a whisper and a slight bump in your threshold.
You have to trust your ears on those signals.
