Found myself seated in front of this.....
Had an opportunity yesterday to attend an exhibit of the Mitchell Hedges Crystal skull.
This is THE skull the new Indiana Jones movie is based on, and Hedges the real life adventurer the Jones character is based on.
This was found in 1924 in a Mayan Pyramid in then British Honduras, now known as Belize.
Smithsonion museum testings revealed no tool or abrasion marks and it is not known how, why or who made it.
It's a cool mystery and a neat artifact.

Re: Found myself seated in front of this.....
All but two of the skulls have been found if i remember correctly. Isnt it some kind of lore about once all the skulls have been found its the start of armagedon or something like that? Its been a while sense I heard the story.
What am I doing so far away from my Civil War relics?

Re: Found myself seated in front of this.....
Only two other authentic skulls are known to exist. The Hedges skull is the only one so far that has a seperate, movable lower jaw that was made from the same left hand growth crystal. The pieces are from the same crystal.
I have read conflicting theories on the Skull, being that it was used to will death down upon people, to that it was used for purposes of good.
Supposedly when the thirteen Skulls are united in a circle at the time the mayan calender ends (which many feel is the end of times in December 2012) that the action will thwart the earths impending doom.
I also read that some people have died unexpectedly after touching or handling the Skull.
The Skulls worth is thought to be priceless

"No tool or abrasion marks."
Right...
That's like the US aerospace firm that sent the world's smallest drill to the Japanese manufacturer that won the contract to build the part.
The part was delivered when complete. And the drill. With a hole drilled through the shank.
Snopes all you want, I wouldn't doubt it.

I didnt quite follow what you meant, rmptr. Sorry, but you lost me?
There were no marks found on the top half, but the removable lower jaw did have traces of marks in the crevices of the teeth
There are also lenses carved into the crystal behind the eye sockets that channel and condense light out the eye sockets when the light is projected underneath the Skull
When looked at from behind the grains in the skull appear to look like the human brain.
This thing is definately strange

AWESOME SKULL! Looks to be truley a one of a kind find!

Re: Found myself seated in front of this.....
In this months' 'Archaeology' magazine and author by the name of Jane MacLaren Welsh wrote an article "Legend of the Crystal Skulls...The truth behind Indiana Jone's latest quest". In this article she pretty well debunks the whole crystal skull mythology and even states that they think the it was started by a charlatan named Eugene Boban.
The author Ms Walsh is an Anthropologist at he Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History.
I am a sceptic when it comes to "mystical powers" but it makes for great stories.

Sorry if I am confusing, TM...
I meant to say that just because 'someone' could not discern how something was made reflects as much upon them as the person who did make it.
No doubt it's a very interesting piece.
I don't have the skill to replicate it!
...will have to look at the info n it...

I too am a Skeptic on this with the claims of magical powers. My interest is in how it was made. It was made against the grain of the Crystal and Quartz is very brittle. It is claimed that to reattempt the feat with modern tools against the grain would shatter the piece. I am no expert in this, so i dont know?
I found that article online, it was a good one. The Hedges camp countered the article on their website as all BS. Its all very interesting and the debate wages on about the Skull.
To be quite frank, i'm not too keen on Archeologists from some of their elitetist attitudes toward our hobby of metal detecting..
I'm no expert in any of this, simply relating what i have learned about the Skull so i'm not taking sides in the debate.
My take is that it a very interesting item. That is something i dont think can be argued about.

Re: Found myself seated in front of this.....
Since the Aztecs and the Mayans are no longer viable civilizations, I guess the skulls didn't work out that well for them.
Kidding aside, I think you did a good job with the story. I believe the skull that you have shown is a work of a master. 13th century or 19th, the work is incredible.
