About 2 feet, I found an unexploded CW artillery shell, and covered it back up, as old ordnance gives me the creeps!

18 inches. It was an old metal milk bottle cap, ID'ed as a silver dollar on my Whites IDX Pro. Talk about disappointment, color and size, but not a dollar. Would have been my first. This type of results made me get a Minelab EXP II. Now I don,t dig as much junk. Once I find a few pieces I stop digging that sound for the day. I have checked this method out well and check it frequently. So far I have not had a good find ID'ed wrong when checked.

In the early 80s 83 I think,
The Colorado river came up out of it's banks and dumped a lot of silt on top of a bunch of stuff that got scattered by the water.
the hole was 5 foot by 8 foot deep...
The object was a fender and bumper from a 1936 ford pickup.
these were carried to the end of a drainage slew and buried under the silt.
It was early Oct. before the stuff dried out enough to dig.

What size coil were you using? I didn't know the IDX Pro would reach 18" on a silver dollar size object. Good news.

Standard coil. It was the deepest hole I ever dug with the IDX. The same day found two war nickels (1943, 1944) stuck together at about 14". The ground was hard and compacted so the targets were left in there tracks for a good measurement. I use my digger as a measurement tool marked every two inches and is 14 " long. I was on a club hunt and we did find a lot that day at a site that had been hunted before. I credit perfect conditions not the detector user as I only had it about a year.

About 3 plus feet in hard packed soil to discover the soil was hard packed because it was an old road and the target turnet out to be a perfectly good 24" galvanized culvert!
