Question about Civil War Relics

There's no battlefields around here for me to go hunt, but one question has always been in the back of my mind about civil war artifacts.

Say you dig up a CS buckle, do you maybe think that's where the owner died and turned back into dirt?

For me I sometimes feel a connection to the past, and wonder how the object I just dug up got there.

Yes, wherever you find a button or a buckle, is where the person died at. Out of respect, you need to re-bury it. And same for coins: they were coins in the pocket of the deceased, or pennies put over their eyes. Need to leave those things where they are. Come to think of it ...... might as well not go detecting, because even the nails you find, are probably coffin nails, and we certainly don't want to be disrespectful!

If you found a buckle, some buttons, and a ring or some other personal items within a few feet of each other, then maybe you may be onto something there. But the occasional button or buckle, no. If you are detecting a campsite, there was the potential of having hundreds if not thousands of troops in a small area. Things such as buttons off of uniforms and buckles, etc. are bound to be lost. On a battlefield, in the heat of battle, you will lose stuff and I doubt you would want to take the time to look for it and pick it up again with lead flying past your head!
