Sub-bottom profiling

Hi all;

I'm new to this forum but have enjoyed reading of the various technologies being used here. I run a company which designs proprietary GPR systems for extreme penetration (100 m +) - completely out of the range of TH, but with 18 years of experience in 75+ countries using only GPR, I'm happy to answer any questions on the technology and its applications. Although most of my experience is in mineral exploration with GPR, I have run TH expeditions to Indonesia, Philippines, Ecuador, Syria, Ecuador, etc.

The question for the group: We have a small project in the Middle East which requires a compact sub-bottom profiler in a lake (we would use one of our GPR systems, but the water is saline). The project does not justify renting or purchasing a normal SBP unit, but we have heard of amateurs using recording fish finders to penetrate lake sediments to a few metres. Does anyone have any leads on which units have recording capabilities for the SBP profiles and GPS tracks?

The lower the operating frequency the deeper the penetration into the
bottom provided it is not too hard such as rock.

Fathometers that operate in the lower portion of the frequency band work
best.

I had an old paper recording survey fathometer that operated at 12KHZ.
You could hear it pinging. It penetrated about 10 feet into the bottom of
Lake Michigan.
