History Channel Show, help

Today i saw on the history channel a story about this archaeologist that locates lost aircraft. On a beach in California he had this man that used an instrument that used divining rods that were connected to a black box by cable, the box looked to be about the size of a VCR. He said this instrument was used by the military to locate land mines. That it would pickup all metals and they used it to pickup the aluminium skin of the aircraft. He said this instrument would pickup to 1500 yards. Anyone know about this item?
