Cromwell, a mag is exactly what you need. Probably a high quality utility mag like a Schonstedt will do it, and you can often rent one at an industrial rent-a-center. You can test it on a car before you rent it.

As a complete novice I guess what I also need to know is how easy they are to actually find things…. is it pretty straightforward to use and can I understand what I am seeing without a degree in physics.?

I have seen a few TV shows where similar types of things are used - but then they appear to need an expert to interpret what is being shown. I don't have any experience of this field. I am willing to try and learn, but I want to think that once I have covered an area its done and I have not missed anything by lack of experience. I wouldnt want to realise that I was doing it badly and had to do it again !

A mag is like a metal detector, when it goes over iron it beeps. There's a lot of iron in the ground, but what you're looking for should give a very broad consistent response.
