gem hunting

Is there any gem hunting to be done in Georgia? And if so what kind of gems. I have been casually gold panning for the past couple years but would like to try something different. I live just north of Atlanta near Lake Allatoona and there is a creek about five minutes from my house that I pan in. I really know nothing about gems, so I am looking for the best way to get started. Thanks.

No one? Can someone at least point in the right direction to get started in gem hunting?

Cleveland, GA gold and gem grubbing is a pay to dig in a dirt pile or out of the creek I find gems and gold out of the creek more than I do out of the pile. A good place to start for both gems and gold. I have multiple zip lock bags full of rubies, emeralds, sapphires, garnets and many types of quartz most are gem quality.

Good Morning,

I am visiting Cleveland and Dahlonega July 4th weekend. I am very excited to go gem mining and panning for gold.
I have to say it is a little confusing as to where to go. I would prefer an unsalted mine for gems where you can really dig. But it does not look like any are there.
So I guess my question would be where to do feel are now the best places to go for gold and the best place for gems.
Salted or unsalted.
One of the places I see you can actually go into the river for $25.00 a day. Do you think that is a good place to start and can you find anything there?
I also see another place takes you into a mine below the ground. But that is not to mine just to show you. looks good.
Where would the locales go to do this please? they always know the best places.
I don't mind driving.
Thank you so much for the help!

Looking for one...
Go to AMERICAN ROCKHOUND and look at some of the Georgia dig sites. I am stationed in Fort Gordon (Augusta) and Lincolnton has a dig site for clubs. I hunt all types of treasure when I have the time but winter is my main season since I'm used to the cold and no snakes. :)

This is my more checked account (Sarge509) since my old email associated with the above account is no longer active. I logged into that one by mistake.

My 6th sense. No seriously. I just use my intuition.
My dad has the metal detector. No clue what brand it is. You think he's gonna let me play around with it? NOPE.

I used to live near lake Allatoona! I was really young at that time but I used to explore the creeks and river beds around it and walk through the woods on long hikes to the lake. Unfortunately I don't know what you can find there... Best way to find out is just go explore and take samples and flag the places you dig somehow and mark containers. Beware the red clay.

Me and the fam go up to NC for our gem hunting. Think the place we went last was Emerald City or something like that. Biggest thing we got this time was an amethyst bigger than a golf ball, lots of garnets in the 1/2 oz range, a few emeralds bout as big as a quarter too. With that being said if there was a place in GA we could go to since the NC spot is a 3 hour drive I would much rather go there.
