I hadn't noticed or had forgotten there's a forum on here devoted to ghost towns. I'd been posting a number of those within my personal experience on the NEW MEXICO forum threads. Never dawned on me anyone outside NM would be interested in them.
I'll link the to this so's anyone of a general ghost town curiosity can find them if they wish:
Florida Near Deminng
Marquez Ghost Town - North of Laguna Rez
Riley - West of Ladron
Zuni Mountains - Post Office Flat and Copperton
Stinking Springs, Grasshopper Canyon north to Fort Wingate southern boundary
Ojo Caliente Apache Stronghold, US Army post, Apache Agency
Rosedale South of Magdalena
Point Site on 117 south of El Malpais
Salt Lake south of Fence Lake
at hobbs new mexico take Knowles road north around 5 miles. on the right side of the road you will see whats left of a cement bank vault. this is what is now left of the old town of knowles. it was a thriving community until around the depression when it was wiped out due to sickness from various types of flu etc etc. the gentlemen that own the land now i have talked to in the past. then i wasnt detecting just loved the past. we found lots of old glass etc just laying on top soil. they said there were nice two story homes when the town was thriving. you will see lots of broken china etc laying around. should be some nice coins and relics. anyone in the town of hobbs can tell you where knowles road is if not its on the maps.
They call Madrid a ghost town but it really isn't anymore. It's mostly art galleries, curiosity stores, coffee shops and touristas wandering among old buildings with new bidnesses in them, along with a locked-in-a-time-capsule biker/hippie resident community. However, a 4WD trip over the ridges to the east and west will still turn some interesting places. There are even ruins of some communes from the '60s back in the canyons to the west.
But on the hill to the west overlooking Madrid there's also a cemetary that provides a time-stream record of the town.
