Up until now, there has always been a compromise between frequency and sensitivity when optimizing detector performance, because lower frequencies are more sensitive to larger gold nuggets and higher frequencies are more sensitive to smaller gold nuggets.
When comparing detectors, the three curves in the diagram represent each detector's ability to find small gold nuggets of a certain size, at a maximum possible depth. Most detectors will find a very large nugget just beneath the surface, however a detector's sensitivity to gold determines how many smaller nuggets will ultimately be recovered in difficult (noisy) ground at greater depths.
An 18 kHz detector will normally have a depth advantage on nuggets ≥ 1.0g over a basic mid-frequency detector, and a 71 kHz detector will have a depth advantage on nuggets ≤ 0.1g. The advanced GOLD MONSTER 1000 uses an intermediate 45 kHz frequency AND a high speed 24-bit signal processor. This primary combination greatly boosts sensitivity to gold beyond that of other single frequency VLF detectors over a wide range of nugget sizes, without introducing excess noise and false signals.

I looked at a monster recently again, (second look now). Then saw the write up above and now I am really considering upgrading my eureka. I think I will wait till the Equinox 800 comes out so I can have a good look at the prospecting mode of it first.

Thoughts of the gold monster as a dedicated relic hunter?

I know it’s not being used for what it’s intended for, but just curious on how it could perform for just relic hunting, and how it can do in trash. I want to solely stick to minelab, and I already have the safari. I also know of the equinox but am still focused on the gold monster as a relic hunter and I don’t know why I keep inquiring about it.

Just curious on your thoughts.

I want to solely stick to minelab, and I already have the safari. I've only got about 15 hrs on my GM 1000. I'm a coinshooter but have pretty much retired my etrac do to having hunted out my areas to the best of my abilities so have switched to prospecting. The GM is a PLEASURE to swing after the beloved etrac!!!! If you relic hunt don't you dig everything anyways? If so....the GM is VERY sensitive and bumping the coils will give a false but that's easy to work around imo. Depth seems good. Battery life is excellent. Disc on the GM works...to a point, larger iron stuff will over ride and you'll dig every bit of aluminum and lead so modern parks etc. are out of the question if coin hunting? Personally....if I was to relic hunt, I'd use my etrac on 2-tone ferrous? I think you should buy it only if you want a nugget shooter......jmo

Buy an equinox if you want to relic hunting, and don't look at the GM 1000 since it is a gold only machine!

I am a beginner detectorist after having been gold prospecting for several years and purchased this unit as my first detector for nuggets. My only frustrations at the start was I was finding everything OTHER than gold. I found horseshoes, boot tacs, square nails, coins etc...I’ve never relic hinted, but spent a lot of time digging relics up with this machine! Fortunately persistence and advice paid off and I began finding gold here and there, but this machine will certainly hit on everything else metallic and learning the sensitivity settings and modes will help you target what you’re looking for whether it’s gold or other.
