something else to watch out for when looking around creeks and rivers in the hills, wouldn't want to run into one.

Agents chop Yuba pot jungle

By Daniel Witter/Appeal-Democrat

Yuba County sheriff's deputies reported seizing a marijuana plantation Wednesday with 6,000 plants worth $6 million near Camptonville.

"Some of these plants were just huge," said Sheriff Virginia Black on Thursday, referring to monster sprouts that reached 12 feet tall and 6 feet wide.

The plantation spread 400 yards along a creek in a canyon near Pike City Road, less than a mile from Highway 49, said Deputy Mark Stoute of the Yuba County Sheriff's Department Marijuana Eradication Team.

"It was like walking through a field of corn," he said. All the plants were removed and destroyed, he said, and no one was arrested at the abandoned camp.

The discovery was one of the largest in Yuba County, bringing the total number of plant seizures to 16,000 this year, according to Black. But it was not the largest pot bust in county history.

Stoute said 8,000 plants were seized near Brownsville in July.

In October 2003, agents discovered 3,000 plants, worth $10 million, near Bullards Bar Reservoir.

Colusa and Butte counties have also made large pot plantation discoveries in recent years

In August 2003, the Colusa County Sheriff's Department found a 10,572-plant garden worth $20 million. In July 2003, Sutter County law enforcement found a 2,000-plant garden near Meridian.

The plantations can be dangerous because they are guarded by armed people, Black said.

Deputies spotted the Camptonville plantation several weeks ago from a plane but could not move earlier because they needed a helicopter to remove the plants, Stoute said.

During that time, about two-thirds of the crop was harvested, according to Black.

"It's becoming more and more common," said Stoute of the plantation. "It's harder to smuggle marijuana across the border because of the security."

Deputies, aided by agents from the Narcotics Enforcement Team-5 and state officials from California's Campaign Against Marijuana Planting, seized the plantation and began cutting down the plants. The effort took about two hours, Stoute said.
