Yes, you can find copper "in the wild," even nuggets. This one is from AZ (it was detected, not panned, though):

I assume you're talking about down in the mitten, not in the U.P. I believe all the copper by you is float copper, and that tends to be quite large. Use a detector, or check in gravel pits for ugly, tarnished, bluish green or green rocks. The copper that the glaciers moved was pretty much all mass copper, the smaller stuff all pretty much tarnished away to nothing.
