Black Sand and Gold - Why here, not there - same stream?

I pan the steams and rivers coming out of the mountains of Tennessee. I have found that there is both black sand and gold, in certain areas of the same steam. I won't find gold without finding black sand first of course, but why is the black sand usually next to a high rocky bank that goes staight down to the steam in a narrow spot in the steam where the water is usually more condensed as it roars through a narrow gorge type setting, and never on a wide bank next to a wide part of the stream or river? I know that I can find black sand and gold in places where I have to crawl down to the stream and have little room to stand because the river and the bank have me wedged in, and the white water is at it's fullest going through a narrow section. Even on the other side of the river where there is more of a flat and wide bank; there is very little black sand. Why would the entire river not all contain the same amount of black sand? Anyone?
