What time of the year will you be traveling this way? It's pretty wet along the coast this time of year, especially this year.
I'm up in the northwest corner of the state and we have some nice camping areas and a little gold in the Smith River. Hand tools and pans only allowed on the Smith.

Check out Douglas City, they have a camp ground I think free camping for a few days with a stream where gold panning is allowed also a some miner areas. Check with the Breau of land Mnagement as they have maps of BLM land where metal detecting is permitted. Good luck.

Your not near enough north for gold mining. Douglas city is by weaverville and 150+ miles outta your way too up the trinity. Go much farther north/inland for gold-tons a au 2 u 2 -John
