Where on the Purgatory River ?
About to make a trip to Trinadad, Colorado and the Purgatory River to go gold panning. Talked to quite a few local people (but no one with any panning experience), who say there's gold all over the Purgatory River. Problem is, It's a pretty BIG river. Looking for more specific info on possible panning sites. Any info or advise would be helpful, no matter how general. Thanks.

Thats a new one on me. When I think of that area, in general, I think of Coal mines. However, there is gold and silver in a lot of places that people don't think to look for it (outside the known Colorado Mineral belt).
These may help (close to where you want to go):
Gold Map for Colorado, Las Animas County (Las Animas County - Colorado)
Gold Map for Colorado, Huerfano County (Huerfano County - Colorado)
Gold Map for Colorado, Custer County (Custer County - Colorado)

Look for locations and their potential river run off areas. A lot the land is likely private (and may be claimed).
