Whats you to always see, a lot of these people in outlying countries use mercury for gold clean-up ! toxic

Dunno if anyone paid attention to ep of Jungle Gold where some locals were sluicing their claim, they used Mercury on the gold and the American guys also use it. wtf...
There are proper ways to use it but they just used hot coals to burn it off, nothing to catch and condense the fumes.
