Gold is often found on the tops of mountains, so just looking for it on the "bottom" is a myth. Most gold is deposited by thermal solution, that is in a liquid state. Your vein just happens to above grade level. Placer gold is what comes out of what you have and had worked it's way down to bedrock. First, it has to get there. The veins where I live are on average 20' above grade. The gold is everywhere from there down to the bedrock and everywhere in between. In my neighboring state the largest nuggets have been found by metal detector enthusiasts in farm fields. They have come out of the host rock (what you have) and have not yet managed to get to bedrock. BTW if the gold is big enough to see it, like yours is, you have an extremely rich deposit. Try to put a claim on it or sssshhhhh! as to where it is.
