Quartz with gold (mercury contaminated?) or platinum.

I saw this rock in the stream in the east fork of the san Gabriel river today.

I cant quite tell what it is on that bit of quartz (which is only a bit bigger than my thumbnail) and jt has the stuff on both sides of the rock.

Please help me identify the substance-- i took as good of pictures as i could have.
