Hook it up to the supply and run it. If the water is spraying out the holes, you need to open them up a bit.

I hate say this again but "it depends". It depends on the the amount and type of material you are going to run. If the black tub is the gravel catch, it's probably going to fill up fast. If you don't catch it before it overflows, you are going to be sucking sand into your pump. If you run material with clay in it you are going to have gumbo before long.

My initial feeling is "no" it's not enough. I'm thinking a couple of surplus 30 gallon barrels with a PVC pipe connecting them. Bilge pump goes in the furthest barrel.

Well, for starters those don't look close to 30 gallon barrels, but use whatever you want. As for the drain pipe, yeah it needs to be higher. The purpose of the multiple barrels is to act as settling tanks to let the majority of suspended particles drop out before reaching the pump.

what should i use for the water catch basin? this is what i had and didnt have to pay anything besides i wasnt using them for anything. i still plan on putting a 5 gallon bucket inside the top bucket to catch the tailings. it will really act as a 3 stage drop. into the black bucket into the second bucket and the drain to the third bucket.
