Well! Nitric and I hit sweetwater creek today! We had a blast trumping around in the water like children. Tons of flat rocks, even set up the sluice. Got tons of black sand I brought home to process through my newly purchased 20,50,100 mesh. Amongst the plentiful bird shot pellets, I found brownish looking "dust" material under the black sands. Is there a good chance this could be flour gold?

Nitric, care to add your adventure and thoughts on the day?

Had a blast! I can't believe the amounts of black sand. A lot of lead shot too. I dug below the clay and got into a gray looking sandy material, It reminded me of wet mortar!Everything toward the top of the clay was red or brown. There were a little bigger pieces of(still small but a little bigger than above the clay)garnet and a lot of black sand mixed in that.

Thanks Duckwalk I had a lot of fun! I didn't even get bit by a snake! ( I have this worry of running into poison snakes! So, Duckwalk told me what to watch for!)

Drat! I was hoping to read about Sweetqater Creek. :BangHead: Has anybody been there this season? Any water?
Hardy har har....
Truth be told, I have never seen so much black sand in 1 shovel full of dirt.

DW... Put the brownish looking dust in a plastic pan, pour in some hydrogen peroxide, let it sit for a half hour then shake shake shake it and rinse with clean water.

Absolutely forget that stinkn' nitric and exercise caution as bleach-good ol' sodium hypochlorite-cleans that gold better, safer and cheaper also. Err on the side a caution-John

I don't see where anyone said to use nitric acid?

Maybe john thinks hydrogen peroxide is nitric acid?

Hydrogen peroxide is safer than bleach and will remove any sulphide coatings from gold.

During my teenage days, I was a janitor for a church. My boss told me to clean the grout in the kitchen using the mutator acid. He forgot to mention to dilute it.... I just poured it straight onto the floor and smoke plumed up and filled the kitchen. I was sure I was going to die. I quit that job the next day...

My takes from the sluice. Only ran maybe 8 gallons worth of 1/2" classified through it. 3 colors :(

Btw when I put the drop of dish soap in the pan, the gold like gravitated together. That one yellow spot is 3 tiny pieces together

Yea that's yesterday. And like 5 seconds ago another discovery. Little shiny bright red flashes on my black sands. Ruby? Garnet? I'll see if I can get a decent enough picture There it is, right in the center of the picture. Red dot. It just gleams under the water.
Edit: when I looked at the picture after I posted it, you can see all the red dots on the black sands on the bottom left of the picture
